Wis. GOP Budget Committee Members Applaud Failure of Dems' Omnibus Spending Bill

December 20th, 2010

Wisconsin's Republican House Budget Committee members, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan and U.S. Rep.-elect Reid Ribble, both applaud the collapse of the Democrats' $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill.  With the failure of the bill, the House Budget Committee will have an easier time axing federal spending.

Rep.-elect Ribble and the other five new Republicans on the committee look forward to getting the nation's spending back on track during the 2012 budget cycle.  The new leadership, including Wisconsin's Ribble, unanimously agrees that the Democrats' argument that higher spending is the way to ensure economic recovery is flawed.

Together, the new Budget Committee hopes do things to truly ease the financial burdens put on Americans by doing things like simplifying the tax code and lowering the overall tax burden.  In turn, American families and businesses will be more optimistic about their financial prospects.

According to Rep.-elect Ribble, "If they [businesses] see Congress get serious about a balanced budget, that will be a powerful signal to business."

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Editorial Board: Gridlock to the Last

December 17th, 2010

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel editorial board, the state employee union contracts should not have been approved.  The editorial board stresses that the lengths to which Democrats went to try to get the contracts approved demonstrates why voters soured on Democrats in November's election.

In the editorial published Thursday, the Journal Sentinel editorial board writes:

"When the vote in the Assembly is dependent on someone who gets out of jail to cast the deciding vote and when even the Senate majority leader breaks with his party to result in a 16-16 tie in that body, that might be a signal that the party's position is suspect."

Wis. Congressional GOP Delegation Votes to Prevent Tax Increase

December 17th, 2010

Wisconsin's current GOP Congressional delegation, including U.S. Reps. Ryan, Sensenbrenner, and Petri all voted last night to prevent massive tax increases from going into effect Jan. 1, 2011.

Each congressman concedes that while the bill may not be perfect, it was essential to vote for it during these difficult economic times.  Hitting taxpayers with a job-killing $3.1 trillion tax increase is simply not the way to get the economy back on track.

WisPolitics: State Employee Union Contracts Fail

December 16th, 2010

As WisPolitics reports today, legislators failed to approve the state employee union contracts.  Two Democratic state Senators joined Republicans in opposing the passage of the contracts.

At a time when Wisconsin faces a $150 million shortfall and a $3.3 billion structural deficit,  these contracts came at a cost Wisconsin simply cannot afford.

Sen. McCain: Top 10 Pork Barrel Projects in Dem's New $1.1 Trillion Omnibus Bill

December 15th, 2010

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) released his top 10 list of pork barrel projects included in the Senate Democrats' $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill via his Twitter account: @SenJohnMcCain.

The bill, which stands at a whopping $1.1 trillion and an astounding 1,924 pages, is absolutely laden with pork projects.  Senate and House Republicans have both banned earmarks, so this bill stands in sharp contrast to the wishes of the congressional right.

Here is the list of Sen. McCain's top 10:

1. $300,000 for Polynesian Voyaging Society in Hawaii

2. $235,000 for noxious weed management in Nevada

3. $246,000 for bovine tuberculosis in Michigan and Minnesota

4. $522,000 for cranberry and blueberry disease and breeding in New Jersey

5. $165,000 for maple syrup research in Vermont

6. $400,000 for solar parking canopies and plug-in electric stations in Kansas

7. $349,000 for swine waste management in North Carolina

8. $125,000 for fishery equipment for the Guam Fisherman's Cooperative Association, Hagatna, Guam.

9. $413,000 for peanut research in Alabama

10. $247,000 for virus free wine grapes in Washington state

Have you spotted or heard of any other ridiculous pork barrel projects in the bill?  Feel free to add them to the comments section at the bottom of this blog post.

Dem. Legislators Ignore Walker's 10-Day Request, Forge Through on Contracts

December 15th, 2010

Governor-elect Scott Walker and his Transition Team requested that Democratic legislators wait to vote on the state employee union contracts until taxpayers had 10 days to review the contracts.  Unfortunately, in an act that may be unprecedented for Wisconsin, an extraordinary session of the state Legislature was approved today which could result in same day ratification of the state contracts.

In a story published today, the MacIver Institute explains that same day ratification of state contracts may be an act unprecedented in Wisconsin history, but that it certainly has not happened in the last 10 years.  The Institute is still conducting research to give a definitive answer on whether or not this has happened in Wisconsin history.

During the last two legislative sessions, the legislature had an average of 9 days to review the contracts between the time the Joint Committee on Employment Review (JCOER) submitted the contracts and the time the legislature voted to approve them.

Today, there could be merely hours between the time the JCOER hands the contracts to the legislature and the legislature approves the contracts.  Click here to read more from the MacIver Institute.

Incumbent Kohl's Job in Jeopardy in 2012?

December 14th, 2010

According to the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling (PPP), 22-year incumbent U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl is in a "pretty solid position" to hold his job in the 2012 Elections.  However, in 2009, this same firm predicted U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold "looks solid" in the 2010 Elections.

Based on their inaccurate prediction for Feingold, we have a feeling U.S. Sen. Kohl shouldn't get too comfortable.

Contract Review Committee Includes Legislators Fired by Voters Nov. 2

December 13th, 2010

According to the MacIver Institute, nearly half of the contract review committee consists of legislators fired by voters in the 2010 Elections.

Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan (D-Janesville), Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker (D-Weston), and Assembly Majority Leader Tom Nelson (D-Kaukauna) all lost their positions on Nov. 2, yet will still play a key role in determing and drafting the state employee union contracts.

Three defeated lawmakers having such agreat control over the future of Wisconsin's spending and deficit seems like an unwise decision for our state.

Governor-elect Scott Walker has already asked Governor Doyle and this group of Democratic legislators to hold off on the contracts since it will be his and the Joint Finance Committee's responsibility to undo the damage the contracts do to Wisconsin.  Unfortunately for taxpayers, Doyle and this group of ousted legislators are looking to leave their mark on Wisconsin–whether it is for better or for worse.

Over the weekend, the Douglas County Republican Women helped make one family's Christmas wishes come true.  The group raised and donated money to a family in their county to help out the wife and children of a member of the military.
